Yikes What a Day

Poor Joel.. I don't get to do a lot of things with him because I have the girls here with me most of the time, and I can't seem to spend the time with him that I'd like sometimes. Today, Sarah took Mallory and Maegan with her, I had Joel and Mikyla and I thought cool.. I'll take the two of them to Mom's to swim. If I'd had all the girls I couldn't take Joel, cuz I can't handle 4 in the pool.

We grabbed our suits, put them on and headed to Mom's.. and the kids dived right in. I touched that water with my toe and pulled it out right fast, that water was COLD! I sat on the deck and watched the kids play until Joel's teeth started chattering. I told him to get out, it was cold and he'd had enough, he told me he 'needed' to swim more.

I wish I'd let him. Instead I insisted he get out, wrapped him in a towel, then started out behind the house to talk to Mom while she planted her tomato plants.

Nick went around and got his bike, came over to where Joel, Mik and I were sitting and Joel got up and went to Nick wanting up on that bike with him. Nick picked him up, put him on the bar in front of him...something I've done with kids a zillion times...but Joel turned to look back at something and he took a nosedive off of the bike.

Nick caught Joel, before he could hit his head, but Joel was trying to balance himself and shoved his foot into the spokes of the front tire, his fall nudged the bike forward, his foot got caught, I screamed for Nick not to move the bike, and oh my God, that baby cut a gash in his foot that looked like he'd cut his foot plum off. It scared us all to death.

All I could think to do was grab him up and run for the car, the hospital's 5 minutes away and I knew I had to get him there.

He ended up getting 14 stitches. The xray showed no broken bones, he missed his tendon and no muscles were hurt, thank GOD!! I've never seen a more strange accident, didn't know a spoke on a bike could do something like that, but I tell ya, I don't like bikes anymore. I never dreamed anything like that could happen, and I feel awful. Poor Nick, I thought he was gonna have a heart attack.

Joel's doing fine though, he was in the E.R. less than an hour, stitched up and on his way here to get all the sufferin' toys we had for him. He has to stay off his foot for 48 hours, and will get the stitches out in 10 days. What a day.
