Mom's Fried Chicken

She brought me a chicken leg onto the front porch this evening. She wanted me to try it, to see if it was done and if it tasted okay. It was golden brown, fried to perfection and she handed me a fork, because she said, it was hot.

You had to be there to appreciate how good that piece of chicken looked, and it smelled much better than it looked. She was right, it was HOT, so I speared the fork into it and took tentative nibbles waiting for it to cool.

That was a mistake. You see, the little blood hounds who live with me, (who were at the time out in the yard playing) must have caught a wiff of that chicken because here came two of them just as fast as their legs could carry them.

Mallory: "Mammy, what do you have?"

Me: "A chicken leg."

Maegan: "In-a-bite!!" (I want a bite.)

Me: "Okay but it's hot, let's let it cool down a bit..."

Maegan: "In-a-bite!!"

Mallory: "Let me touch it, I bet it's not too hot for me, just let me touch it."

Me: "Back off with your hands, I'll give you a bite, just a minute it's hot.."

Maegan: "In-a-bite!!"

Mallory: (running for the screen door) "I'll just go get my own then!"

Me: "No, these are for dinner, you can just have a taste of this one until it's time to eat."

Maegan: "In-a-bite!!"

Mallory: "No fair."

Maegan: "In-a-bite!!INABITE!!"

Me: "Okay here you go.. "

I should have hidden to eat it. As soon as I said here you go, Mallory snatched it from my hand the way a starved dog in Ethopia would have done. She gnawed half of it and swallowed it whole, then Maegan stole it from her in the same fashion. That really miffed Mallory who insisted she was going to just starve to death unless I made Maegan give it back.

I promised her I'd never let her starve to death, that dinner was almost ready, but it didn't help. Since I couldn't pry the thing from Maegan once she had it, Mallory was just out in the cold as much as I was.

Man those were really some good chicken legs. Thanks for dinner, Mom!
